On the 6 September 2011 Creative Growth invited to a breakfast briefing in Brussels. The aim of the event was to share project findings and to present policy recommendations for the next steps to promote cultural and creative industries in EU. Some 30 participants attended the event.
The briefing started with a general outlook and presentation of partner experiences and findings during the three year cooperation project creating the bases for the projects policy recommendations. Cristina Fanjul from CCEI Asturias talked about how access to finance is a core barrier for creative companies and also described how Asturias have worked with a model of designing an Asturian Creative Enterprise Office to provide dedicated business support to creative companies. The existing business support system plays a key role. Graham Weir, Edinburgh Napier University shared experience from working with a lecture series to increase creative industries business advisers’ knowledge of specific sectors such as the music industry. Another example showcased was the experiences from Emilia-Romagna where a support path for creative businesses has been tested on 10 creative companies. Majbritt Chambers from Spinderihallerne described experiences from working in a dedicated incubator and its benefits.
The Creative Growth policy recommendations report was presented by Jan Runge, Spectrum. The report points out a number of policy recommendations on a European level to develop the cultural and creative industries. The CCI’s create significant amounts of growth and employment (approximately 5 million jobs in the EU) and contribute to sustainable economic development in all Member States. Creative policy making is needed to grow Europe’s creative industries and re-ignite competitiveness and innovation. Some examples of the recommendations highlighted:
-
promote greater investments and investment readiness in creative industries
-
support and provide assistance to incubators and related services
-
facilitate better education, research and industry relations in Creative Industries
-
Support the networking capacities of creative sector companies and professionals
-
Adapt existing business support schemes to the realities of the creative economy
The report was officially handed over by the Creative growth project to the European Commission DG Enterprise and Industry Ms Agnieszka Truszczynska.
